The Hamlet on Main Avenue

Wynantskill sits in the northeast corner of the Town of North Greenbush. NY 66 is Pawling Avenue on the Troy side of the line and becomes Main Avenue here, and most homes are on the side streets off it. The 2020 census counted 4,050 people.

The name comes from the stream. Kill is an old Dutch word for creek, and Wynant was Wynant Gerritsen van der Poel, who held a share of a sawmill on the stream in the 1650s. A Dutch Reformed church started around 1794 and a post office opened in 1820. In the 1950s the town historian says Main Avenue was called gas station row, with seven service stations in under a mile.
